Here are the two types of visas you may need to apply for if you want to study in the United Kingdom:
- Short-Term Study Visa (valid for 6 or 11 months) – for students planning to study a short language course or conduct research as part of a degree programme.

10 Documents Required for UK Students Visa Application
Here are the ten most important documents needed for a student visa application in the United Kingdom:
1. Your Valid Passport
Your passport is your primary form of identification, and it must be valid for at least six months beyond the duration of your intended stay in the United Kingdom. If you have a travel document other than a passport, make sure it meets the visa requirements of the United Kingdom.
When you apply for a visa, your passport must be valid. If your passport expires soon after you arrive in the UK, you may find it easier and less stressful to renew your passport before applying for a visa and travelling to the UK.
2. Visa Application Form:
You must complete the appropriate online Student visa application form. Please keep in mind that the application form differs for students applying from abroad and those applying from within the UK. Make sure to use the form that is appropriate for your situation.
You must fill out an online visa application form, which is available on the official UK government website. This is the starting point for your application journey, and it lays the groundwork for you to provide supporting documents that validate the information you enter.
3. Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies(CAS):
The CAS is the most important document in your visa application. It is a document issued by your sponsoring UK institution that serves as proof of your admission to a recognised educational programme. Your CAS will contain important information about your course, institution, and visa sponsorship.
Each visa application must include a new CAS. You must apply for a new CAS if you are continuing your course at the University or if you have completed your course and are applying to study a new course. Similarly, if your previous visa application was denied, you must obtain a new CAS before submitting another application.
4. Proof of Finances:
This could be your last six months’ worth of bank statements or pay stubs. For financial evidence, there are specific Home Office maintenance requirements. You must submit evidence that meets these requirements, typically demonstrating that money was held for 28 consecutive days and that the evidence was not more than 31 days old.
If you are relying on your parent(s)’ funds you will also need to include the following:
- Letter of consent from your parent(s)
- Your birth certificate
5. Biometric Information:
A facial photograph and up to ten fingerprints are required for a visa application and can be captured digitally in the form of a digital photograph of their face and a scan of their fingerprints, or by using wet-ink prints and a paper photograph.
If you are applying for a visa that allows you to stay in the UK for more than six months, you must submit your biometric information. This includes providing fingerprints and having a digital photograph taken at the appropriate application centre.
6. English Language Evidence:
Proof of English language proficiency is required to demonstrate your ability to effectively communicate and participate in your studies. This usually entails submitting the results of an English language test from an approved testing centre, such as IELTS or TOEFL.
If you are applying to study at the degree level or higher (undergraduate, Master’s, or PhD), the University may use its own method of evaluating your English language skills.
Where the University has made its own assessment, this will be indicated on your CAS as “Higher Education Institution (HEI) has made assessment,” and this is also the option you must select on your visa application form in order to demonstrate how you met the English language requirement. In this case, no additional evidence is required.
7. Tuberculosis (TB) Test certificate:
If you are coming to the UK for more than 6 months and have lived in one of the Home Office-approved countries for at least 6 months, you must take a TB test and submit your TB test certificate with your visa application. It is about where you have lived rather than your nationality. The test must be administered at a TB test clinic.
If your test results show that you do not have tuberculosis, you will be given a certificate valid for 6 months from the date of your x-ray. Include this certificate with your application for a UK visa.
8. UK cover letter (If applicable)
A personalised letter that goes with the visa application, explaining the purpose of the visit and the applicant’s background. It is an important supporting document that conveys the applicant’s genuine intentions and increases the applicant’s chances of obtaining the desired visa.
9. Academic Qualifications:
You do not need to provide evidence of your previous qualifications with your visa application if you are studying at the degree level or higher because your CAS will include details of your qualifications. However, if you are 16 or 17 years old and not a national, you must provide these documents.
Unless you are a national, you must submit any documents listed on your CAS with your visa application if you are studying at a lower level than a bachelor’s degree.
- Acceptable evidence includes:
- certificate or certificates of qualification
- transcript of results
- print out of qualification or transcript results from the awarding body’s online checking service
10. Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) Certificate:
Certain science and technology courses at the PhD or Master’s level may necessitate an Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) certificate.
The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) issues the ATAS certificate for permission to study the course. If you need an ATAS certificate, your offer letter and CAS will tell you.
Before you can apply for a Student Visa, you must first obtain an ATAS Certificate. Apply for ATAS as soon as possible, keeping in mind that they are only valid for six months. If applying in the UK, apply four months before your current visa expires; if applying outside the UK, apply one month before you need the ATAS.
Applications are processed in the order in which they are received, and there is no way to ‘fast track’ an ATAS application. Please keep in mind that receiving an ATAS certificate can take up to 30 working days.
